"My biggest regret?" The grey tom's whiskers twitch with anxiety, "well, I suppose it doesn't matter anymore, now that i'm leaving, does it?" He sighs, a tired look crossing his face. "Alright. Go ahead and make yourself comfortable."
He settles close by, his rough fur warm against the chilly winter air. He is silent at first, staring out into the darkness, but he speaks up again after some patient waiting, "I'd say my biggest regret was letting my best friend down." He says quietly, almost too softly to hear, then clears his throat and continues, "My best friend was Hailsky - you might remember him as the old Seer in the Enclave. We grew up together, all those seasons ago." He smiles briefly, and it's obvious by the sadness in his green eyes that it's a bittersweet memory. "Many cats thought we were brothers, we looked similar enough. Maybe we weren't brothers by blood, but I'd call him mine anyway." He chuckled lightly, but his face fell again as he kept talking, "I was terrified when we'd been picked as the next potential Seer and Healer. Everyone knows what happens to Seers as they spend more time with the ancestors." He goes quiet, looking mournfully at his paws. "He wasn't an exception, by any means, but ... there wasn't a moment I couldn't understand him, even when no one else did." The tom murmurs, "No matter what, we would never be seperate. That is, until the Faastavi came. I tried so hard, but it wasn't enough," His voice cracks, and he takes a few moments to compose himself, "between the hunger and the sickness, I couldn't heal him." Finishing the tale, he lets out a deep breath, relieved that it's finally over. "I can't thank you enough for giving me another chance - another chance to be a Healer was all I'd ever wanted." He stands again, arching his back in a stretch, and pads away a bit before looking back, and you can see his eyes are glittering with an emotion you can't quite place. "Come see me again in Saenn, won't you?" Before you can process what he's said, you suddenly remember where you are when he turns to walk away and his pelt starts filling with flickering stars. As you watch him go, you awake in your nest, and lift your head sleepily. You rub your bleary eyes, in no rush to get up, but when you open them you notice the fresh pawprints leading out of your den and into the snow outside. |
